Manila: The Heart of the Philippines

Manila, officially the City of Manila, is the capital and second most populous city in the Philippines. As of the 2024 census, it boasts a population of 1,902,590. Situated on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on Luzon Island, Manila is a highly urbanized hub, recognized for its historical significance and modern vibrancy. Its population density reaches 43,611.5 inhabitants per square kilometer, marking it as one of the world's most densely populated cities.

Manila holds the distinction of being the first chartered city in the Philippines, established by Philippine Commission Act No. 183 on July 31, 1901. It gained autonomy through Republic Act No. 409, known as The Revised Charter of the City of Manila, on June 18, 1949.

A City Steeped in History

The story of Manila traces back to 1258 with the emergence of Maynila, a Tagalog fortified polity. This settlement laid the foundation for what would become modern Manila. A pivotal moment arrived on June 24, 1571, when Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi triumphed over Rajah Sulayman in the Battle of Bangkusay. Following this victory, Legazpi initiated the construction of Intramuros, a walled fortification, atop the ruins of the older settlement. The name "Manila" is derived from this settlement. During the Spanish colonial era, Manila served as the capital of the Captaincy General of the Spanish East Indies, encompassing the Marianas, Guam, and other islands, all administered by Mexico City under the Viceroyalty of New Spain.

Manila Today: A Metropolitan Hub

Today, the term "Manila" often encompasses the entire metropolitan area, the greater metropolitan area, and the city proper. Metro Manila, the officially designated metropolitan area, serves as the capital region of the Philippines, incorporating larger cities such as Quezon City and the bustling Makati Central Business District.

Geographical Landscape

The Pasig River bisects Manila, creating northern and southern divisions within the city. Manila comprises 16 administrative districts and is further divided into six political districts for congressional representation and city council elections.

Manila's Global Standing

In 2018, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network recognized Manila as an Alpha global city. It ranked seventh in economic performance globally and second regionally. The Global Financial Centres Index places Manila at 79th worldwide. However, it's worth noting that Manila is also the world's second most natural disaster-exposed city, following Tokyo.
