UST Plaza Mayor: A Historical Landmark

The UST Plaza Mayor, situated in the center of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, is a significant historical site. This expansive plaza served as the location for the Americans to declare the liberation of the Santo Tomas Internment Camp in 1945, marking a pivotal moment in history. Before its development, the area in front of the UST Main Building functioned as a parking area and pedestrian zone, with Benavides Drive bisecting it to connect Quezon Drive and Osmeña Drive. As part of the university’s preparations for its Quadricentennial Celebration, the plaza was renovated to highlight the architectural grandeur of the Main Building.

Architectural and Design Features

The plaza features a rectangular design divided into 13 vertical segments, alternating between terracotta and gray-colored tiles. Twin head Victorian lamp posts line both ends of the quadrangle, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The UST Plaza Mayor is connected to UST Plaza Benavides via M H Del Pilar Lane, Burgos Lane, and the Chinese tombstone. On the southeast side of the quadrangle, you'll find a statue of a tiger and the UST block letters. The current tiger statue, unveiled in August 2022, stands approximately 8 feet tall.

Historical Significance and Key Events

Plaza Mayor holds a special place in Metro Manila’s history. As a designated National Cultural Treasure, it stands at the heart of the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas. Founded on April 28, 1611, by Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, the university was initially named Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario and was run by the Order of Preachers. The titles Pontifical and Royal were bestowed by King Charles III of Spain and Pope Leo XIII, making UST the only royal and pontifical university in the Philippines. Originally located in Intramuros, the university moved to its present site in Sampaloc, Manila. During World War II, the campus was transformed into a detention camp by Japanese forces. The university's academic operations were interrupted twice: during the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the Japanese occupation.

Today, Plaza Mayor is a popular venue for major university events, including the UAAP Season 79 opening and the USTV Awards. Besides its historical importance, Plaza Mayor is one of several iconic spots on the UST campus. From here, visitors can easily access the Main Building, UST Museum, Miguel de Benavides Statue, Arch of the Centuries, and Benavides Lane.

How to Get There and Best Time to Visit

To reach Plaza Mayor, take the MRT to Cubao, Quezon Avenue, or North Avenue station. From there, take a jeepney to Quiapo and ask to be dropped off at UST.

The best time to visit Plaza Mayor is during the warm season for a more enjoyable tour of the school.
