Gong cha which translates to tribute tea for the Emperor, opened its door to a highly saturated bubble tea market in 2006 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The first store was established by a Hong Kong native in 2009. In 2012, it had forty-six stores in Hong Kong, mainly in shopping centers and MTR stations, but the number dropped to five due to decreased business from scandal issues.
It serves a total of about fifty-seven different drinks, which can
be divided into seven types: brewed tea, house specials, coffee, Healthy Series, milk tea, Creative Mix, and ice smoothies in medium and large sizes. Hong Kong's most popular is Gong Cha Milk Green Tea, which has a lower layer of brewed tea topped by an upper layer of special creamer. They also offer tea and sets in stores, such as Darjeeling Spring Tea and Bi-Luo-Chun Green Tea. They also have food in some branches, a new recent addition, the mochi Waffles.
Established in 2006, Gong cha has been appreciated by its customers, relying on good words of mouth and unique customized services originated in Taiwan. From then on, the story of Gong cha has widely spread, and Gong cha has become one of the best-known quality tea providers in the world.
