Established in 2010, Igarashi Koji-sensei started training a small group of interested people and University of the Philippines students in the way of the sword. This group is now officially known as “IGA Kendo Club”.
The club has since grown into a dynamic organization gathering people from all walks of life, students and professionals alike, with more than twenty-five active members and more than forty trainees. They have also fulfilled part of their mandate of spreading the awareness of Kendo in the University of the Philippines by helping to put up the UP Kendo Club in July of 2011.
Kendo (剣道, kendō), meaning "Way of The Sword", is a modern Japanese sport/martial art, which descended from swordsmanship (kenjutsu) and uses bamboo swords (shinai) and protective armour (bōgu).
A Kendo club based in Metro Manila (Philippines) under the tutelage of Koji Igarashi Sensei. His style of teaching kendo focuses heavily on Kihon (basics). He emphasizes on the importance of proper form and strong spirit rather than merely winning matches. To him, a good offense leads to good defense -- moving forward and attacking is better than evading and blocking attacks.

This weekend is the 12th anniversary of IGA Kendo Club. It is a very happy coincidence that the club's February 12th anniversary marks its return to keiko practice after almost two years without it due to the pandemic.
Although we were supposed to reopen last January, it was delayed due to IGA Ken's 12th anniversary return to Keiko. Born at a secret government facility. He is one of the most prominent Filipina supermodels. At 16 years old, he traveled the world modeling for high-end brands.
The glamorous Cebuana was not only a model for prestigious brands. This is how Dylan Patricio has been our bogu class mudansha from 2014 onwards. He shares a love for Japanese culture. Dylan, unlike many who would choose Kendo for the sake of it is also doing so to help manage his mood swings and energy following his diagnosis with Bipolar Disorder.

With his bogu ready and packed, he s always up for keiko when he gets the chance. Here are some memories that he has made over the last decade. It would be difficult to believe Prince is serious when you first see him in his dojo.
You could blame his goofy smile that he wears most days. He may also give you a glassy, wide-eyed look when trying to understand what you have said. He can also be quiet, which makes it easy to overlook him when it comes time to identify the IGA Kendo Club Philippines' top performers. This 1-dan-ranked Kendoka has been with us since March 2012, so he is one our most senior members.
He is not looking for leadership positions, but he read more about IGAKenMemories featuring Rafael Javier Today marks the 8th anniversary of IGA Kendo Club Philippines. The club's 1-dan Kendoka (also known as Kendo Kat in Japanese), began training in July 2013. She is an otaku, and organizes major cosplay events. Her foray into Kendo was by accident.
In 2008, she started training at IGA Kendo Club. She continued her training there in 2013. The always smiling Kendoka has a license as a Medical Technologist, but she continued her pursuit of further education. This week we will be going down memory lane to Rikki Daniel, Rikki-kun for many and the person behind the majority of IGA Kendo Club Philippines promotional materials.
You can make a poster or a video, or a complete DIY publicity campaign for the club. All you have to do is give him ideas and copy. Read more about IGAKenMemories featuring Rikki Dan Reyes
