Lucky Doll was founded by Ella Lim, a Filipino woman-owned lingerie shop, in Manila in 2006.
It is still in operation today. Bras, swimwear, shapers, and panties were the first products of Lucky Doll. Lucky Doll grew in popularity and customers demanded more sexy items. Lucky Doll is now a curated gallery that includes lingerie sets and stockings as well as garter belts and plus-size lingerie.
What is the secret to Ella's success? After graduating from college in Fine Arts, Ella became passionate about many seemingly inextricable subjects, including ska band, drawing, painting, and longboarding. But one thing is certain, Ella doesn't want a 9-5 job. Although Ella knew about the success of e-commerce in America, she wasn't sure if the Philippines would be able to replicate this model. As an experiment, she sold a second-hand wallet on ebay in 2004.
It was sold in less than two days. This made it clear that the Philippines is poised for an e-commerce revolution. It was easy to sell any product online, and she could even work from home in her pajamas every day. It was a great business idea..
For Ella, there is nothing more humiliating than a sales woman sizing up and down you and announcing that it to the entire department store. Lucky Doll was created from Ella's humiliating bra shopping experience. This made Ella realize the need for an online Lingerie Shop where Filipino women could shop discreetly and easily for their underwear. Ella transformed Lucky Doll from an idea that was just a way for her to escape a corporate job into something with purpose.
Lucky Doll's goal is to create a safe place for women to shop, without being shamed or judged about their sexuality. Shop that encourages self-love and self confidence in women of all sizes. From growing up in 50's bungalow houses with fashionista grandmothers, Ella has a passion for vintage 40 and 50 fashion. She would lock herself into grandma's bedroom as a child to enjoy her pin-up collection of dresses, shoes and magazines.
Bettie Page was the queen of pin-up, and she became a fan of vintage fashion from her early exposure. Lucky Strike's Vintage Magazine Ad inspired her to borrow Lucky, combine it with Doll (a 1950s term for a beautiful woman) and create Lucky Doll.
