LPU was founded in 1952 and is the only school founded by a Philippine president. The institution was named after lykeion, the grove where Aristotle and Demetrio taught their pupils in Ancient Athens. It was built on the old San Juan de Dios Hospital site. LPU opened its gate to its first students on July 7, 1952.
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted LPU an Autonomous Status. It is a category A teaching university in the Philippines, the highest level of assessment in the Institutional Quality Assurance through Monitoring and Evaluation framework. LPU is rated as one of the Philippines' Top Universities by CHED.
It is also the only university in the Philippines that passed the accreditation of The Tourism and Hospitality Management Education Center of Excellence or THE-ICE and is hailed as one of the best Asian universities of the QS 2022 ranking.

Jose P. Laurel. He was the only Philippine president to serve in each of three Government branches. Dr.
Laurel was a lawyer, politician, constitutionist, jurist and writer. Education was Dr. Laurel's greatest passion. His credentials as an educator are unassailable, having graduated from top institutions like Yale University, Escuela de Derecho and University of the Philippines College of Law.
In spite of his many commitments, he wrote extensively about education. He was able to instruct in multiple educational institutions in Manila. He introduced national character- and morality-enhancing educational policies during the Second World War. He was a Yale student in the 1920's when he got the idea to start a school.
This dream became a reality three decades later when he joined some close friends and made it a reality. Lyceum of the Philippines University, as it's now called, was established with the goal of being a centre of academic excellence in the Philippines. It officially opened to the public on 7 July 1952. Because of his love for classical thought and admiration of knowledge, Dr.
Laurel named the school Lyceum of the Philippines Lykeios after the ancient Athens site where the great Philosopher Aristotle nurtured the minds of the students. Veritas et Fortitudo et Patria is Dr. Laurel's belief that learning and character building are important for God and the country. In 1959, Dr.
Laurel died unexpectedly. Sotero was his third son and was in law practice at the time. He assumed the responsibility for running the school. As his father had helped to organize LPU, Senator Sotero was his first executive secretary.
Sotero was the chosen son who oversaw the growth of the school beyond Manila and into the provinces for the following 43 years. He founded Lyceum for the Philippines University-Batangas in 1966. Lyceum for the Philippines-Laguna was established in 2000. The fourth son of Senator Laurel, Dr.
Peter P. Laurel, is now in charge of both campuses. To increase the number of LPU campuses in Cavite to 5, a new campus was opened in 2008. It has a total enrollment of about 37,000 and approximately 15,000 students are in hospitality programs.
Senator Laurel s eldest son, Atty. Roberto P. Laurel is the head of LPU Davao's Manila, Makati, and Cavite campuses. LPU Davao's 2019 operations will be led by Dr.
Peter P. Laurel.
