Formerly named Mapua Institute of Technology and referred to by its acronym MU, it is a non-sectarian, private, research-oriented higher education institution located in Intramuros, Manila, and Makati.
It was founded by the first registered Filipino architect named Don Tomas Mapua in 1925. After he died, it was continued by his children, Gloria M. Mapúa-Lim and Óscar M. Mapúa Sr., a graduate in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
During WWII, the main campus was used as a garrison by the Japanese forces during the occupation of manila. All organizations and classes were suspended. In 1945, the institute suffered destruction during the liberation.
The Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) granted the level IV accredited status for the university's Civil Engineering program. Mapua has been included in ranking 501 to 550 in the 2021 QS Asia University Rankings.
