National University (NU) is considered the first coeducational institution and private nonsectarian in the Philippines. It is the first University to use English as its medium of instruction replacing Spanish. They expanded by setting the secondary campus with its main campus in Sampaloc, Manila.
Colegio Filipino was founded by Mariano F. Jhocson Sr. on August 1, 1900. It received its university status and changed its name from National Academy to National University after being approved by the Department of Public Instruction on June 17, 1921, and only a handful of students were enrolled. The University offers 24 undergraduate degrees in its eight colleges. It also offers basic education with NU Nazareth School.
