The Museum fittingly holds Marcos’ collection and the Guinness Record for the World’s Largest Pair of Shoes.
The vast majority of the collection is held at the Shoe Museum, 749 pairs to be exact, was from Marcos’ personal wardrobe and has placed a portrait of her near her collection as well.
All shoes in the Museum are treated with the utmost care, and most are kept in dust-free and moisture-free glass cabinets to preserve them in perfect condition.
Initially called Footwear Museum of Marikina, the Shoe Museum was constructed in 1998 and opened in 2001 as an homage to the city’s title as ‘the Shoe Capital of the Philippines’. This building has a fascinating history as it used to be an arsenal during the Spanish times and a detention cell during the American-Filipino War. Later on, the Americans converted it into a motor pool but converted it into a rice mill by the Tuason family after World War II.
Marikina Museum houses the shoes of famous personalities, including pairs from former presidents of the Philippines and former Mayors of Marikina, government officials and cabinet secretaries, celebrities, movie stars, ambassadors, and well-known politicians, including senators. Some of the shoes of former First Lady Imelda Marcos are also displayed at the museum.
