About University of the East

UE started in two rented rooms in Dasmarinas Street, Manila, where 110 students enrolled in Certified Public Accountant (CPA) review classes, hardly two months after the Philippines received independence. Four students made it to the top spots out of 110 students in the 1947 CPA board Examinations.

Five educators, namely Santiago de la Cruz, Dr. Francisco Dalupan Sr., José L. Torres, Dr. Hermengildo B. Reyes, and Enid Mapa, established the Philippine College of Commerce and Business Administration (PCCBA) along R. Papa St. in Sampaloc, Manila on September 11, 1946, and admitted 350 students in the summer of 1947. On July 4, 1951, PCCBA was granted university status and was renamed as University of East. UE Main Campus has twelve buildings located in the center of the University Belt area, Sampaloc Manila.

The University of the East, also known as UE, is a private university located in Manila, Philippines. Founded in 1946, business tycoon Lucio Tan acquired the university in 1990. UE was once labeled as the "largest university in Asia" when its enrollment in the past reached over 65,000 students.

Jaime Hernandez, UE founder was born July 11, 1892. He had previously been a certified public accountant as well as a third placer on the Bar Exams. His Bachelor of Laws degree was from the Philippine Law School. He also received his Doctorate of Civil Law from the University of Santo Tomas. In 1911, he was a clerk in the government and rose slowly through the ranks.

He was named by the then-US President Herbert Hoover the Insular Auditor, the first Filipino to hold the position previously reserved for Americans. He was named the first Auditor general by President Manuel Quezon when the Philippine Commonwealth was founded in 1935. He served the Philippine government in exile from 1942 to 1946 as Secretary of Finance. The then Philippine President Sergio Osme left America to go with Gen.

Douglas MacArthur, returning via Leyte. Secretary Hernandez was left in charge of government-in exile. Dr. Hernandez was Vice President of the University of the East during the early years of its establishment.

Dr. Hernandez was one of the First Five UE founders who left UE. He wanted to recreate the magic of UE in Naga, Camarines Sur. In 1961, he took over the presidency of University of Nueva Caceres.
