Museo El Deposito is made of volcanic tuff and is underneath the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine in San Juan City. The underground reservoir held water pumped from Santolan and flowed to various hydrants and fountains in Manila.
It was part of the larger Carriedo waterworks design built from 1878 to 1882 by Genaro Palacios. The infrastructure project was named after a Spanish official who bequeathed a grant to the City of Manila in 1733, Francisco Carriedo y Peredo.
It was also used during American and Japanese rule as an armory, a firing range, and a hospital for tuberculosis patients. It was chosen and inaugurated as the site of a national shrine in 1973.
A history museum featuring the El Deposito underground water reservoir. It conducts public programs like online exhibits, webinars, art workshops, and training that promote Philippine history.
