In 1907, the Philippine Commission passed Act No. 1688, which appropriated about 780,000 PHP for PGH construction. On February 28, 1908, the cornerstone of the hospital was laid. The bids for the buildings' construction were opened on July 27. The contract was awarded to the lowest bidder, H. Thurber of the Manila construction Company.
UP-PGH or PGH is appointed as the National University Hospital and the National Government Referral Center. It stands within a 10-hectare (25-acre) vicinity of UP Manila Campus and is the largest training hospital in the country. It has 1,100 beds and around 4,000 employees to serve more than 600,000 patients every year.
The laboratory hospital of health science students enrolled in UP includes students of medicine, physical therapy, pharmacy, nursing, dentist, speech pathology, and occupational therapy. There are 16 clinical departments under PGH, including Surgery, Family and Community Medicine, Pediatrics, Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Neurosciences, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pathology, Emergency Medicine, and more which offer residency and fellowship training.
The Philippine General Hospital a.k.a. University of the Philippines–Philippine General Hospital or UP–Philippine General Hospital or simply referred to as UP–PGH or PGH, is a tertiary state-owned hospital administered and operated by the University of the Philippines Manila.
