PNU was originally established as Philippine Normal School (PNS), an institution for the training of teachers enacted on January 21, 1901, under Act No. 74 of the Philippine Commission. It opened on September 1, 1901, on the site of a former Spanish normal school in Escuela Municipal from Intramuros.
Provincial normal schools were built in different parts of the country as branches such as Ilo-Ilo Normal School and Cebu Normal School in 1902, Zamboanga Normal School in 1904, and West Visayas State University and Iloilo National High School until the present day. The Torch is the official student publication of the university, founded in 1912. It publishes other printed materials funded, periodicals, managed and written by the students. The Torch publishes at least seven issues annually called Ang Sulo and a literary folio called Aklas.
The Philippine Normal University is a public coeducational teacher education and research university in the Philippines. It was established in 1901 through Act No. 74 of the Philippine Commission "for the education of natives of the Islands in the science of teaching".
