The Ateneo Art Gallery is a university museum located inside the Areté building of Ateneo de Manila University. Established in 1960, it is widely recognized today as the first museum of Philippine modern art.
The Gallery is widely recognized as being the original museum for Philippine modern art. It was founded in 1960 by Fernando Zbel, who left his extensive collection of Filipino works to the Ateneo. Over the years other artists and philanthropists followed Zobel's lead, filling the gaps. The collection covers every Philippine postwar art movement, from abstract expressionism and neo-realism to the current post-modern hybrid tendencies. The Ateneo Art Gallery now has a new location in the Arts Wing.
It will feature more of the permanent collection on the second and upper floors, as well as different themes. Third-floor galleries can be used for experimental and contemporary art projects, such as the Ateneo Art Awards. They also provide space for historical and survey exhibitions. Ben Chan ArtSuite is a multipurpose space that can be used for education and public programs like workshops, lectures and seminars.
