On June 18, 1908, the University of the Philippines was originally founded by the American colonial government. It was established through the approval of Act No. 1870 of the 1st Philippine Legislature to serve as an "advanced instruction in literature, the sciences and arts, philosophy, and to give technical professional and training" to eligible students regardless of "nationality, age, sex, political affiliation, and religious belief.
The university system has eight constituent universities UP Diliman serves as the main campus and offers the most courses, UP Manila, UP Los Baños, UP Open University, UP Baguio, UP Visayas, UP Mindanao, and UP Cebu are scattered across 17 campuses. Its alumni include the Nobel Peace Prize, 14 of 26 chief justices, 7 of 16 Philippine presidents, 40 of 57 national artists, and 36 of 42 national scientists.
Alumni also include 15,000 doctors, 15,000 engineers, 23,000 teachers, 8,000 lawyers, more senators and members of the Philippine House of Representatives, and thousands of graduates in other academic fields, which contain some of its approximate 260,000 living alumni worldwide.
The University of the Philippines Diliman (Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Diliman), also referred to as UPD, UP Diliman, or simply University of the Philippines or UP, is a coeducational, public research university located in Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines.
