The island of Binondo was purchased in 1594 by the Spanish Governor, then given over as an area for Christian Chinese to settle. As a result, Binondo outgrew the other missions, evolved into a town, and became the center of Chinese integration into Manila's Hispanic, Christian society. Soon after the foundation of Binondo, the Church of Binondo was built in its first iteration. As hoped by the missionaries, the Church was a central institution in the community.
Popularly known as Binondo Church, the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz was established by the Dominicans in 1596 and initially dedicated to Saint Gabriel the Archangel who became Binondo’s patron until the mid-19th century. It is also known as Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish as it venerates the Blessed Virgin Mary as Binondo’s patroness from the early 1700s up to the present.
