As the Church of Manila, it was established by the secular priest Juan de Vivero in 1571 under the patronage of Mary, La Purissima e Inmaculada Concepcion. Fr. Vivero was given the special privilege and sole faculty by the Archbishop of Mexico to take care of the spiritual welfare of the new Philippine colony.

The island of Binondo was purchased in 1594 by the Spanish Governor, then given over as an area for Christian Chinese to settle. As a result, Binondo outgrew the other missions, evolved into a town, and became the center of Chinese integration into Manila&#39;s Hispanic, Christian society. Soon after the foundation of Binondo, the Church of Binondo was built in its first iteration. As hoped by the missionaries, the Church was a central institution in the community.

Popularly known as Binondo Church, the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz was established by the Dominicans in 1596 and initially dedicated to Saint Gabriel the Archangel who became Binondo&rsquo;s patron until the mid-19th century. With its Modern Spanish style built in Art Deco, adapting the latest technique in building reinforced concrete, the church&#39;s architectural design is composed of Romanesque and Gothic, measuring 85&times;40 meters and a height of 25 meters.
